Then, starting in late 1969, Leary was convicted, imprisoned, escaped, smuggled to Algeria, exiled there with the Black Panthers, escaped that into exile in Switzerland under the patronage of a Swiss-French arms dealer, then suddenly kidnapped by the United States Government at the airport in Afghanistan, and returned to the same prison in California he escaped from three years prior. Shortly after arriving back in prison in the US in January of 1973, his wife, Joanna, was circulating a proto version of what would become Neurologic. Written with a stubby pencil under a single 20 watt light bulb, Leary later wrote,“It was one of those inspired clear-channel transmissions. I had been thinking about the classification of brain circuits for years, and now in a slow, tidy handwriting, with almost no corrections, the words poured out.” The complete version was partially serialized in the Berkeley Barb in May and June of 1973 with the full publication in limited printings out later that same June.
While short a couple significant tweaks that were soon to come, Neurologic lays out the basic framework of the Eight Circuit Model as we know it today combining imprinting and reimprinting theories with a multi-leveled circuit system that built from the ideas of “consciousness is energy coded and by a structure” presented in the ETC essay. He drew from Erik Erikson’s developmental psychology stages for the imprint periods of the first four circuits, but repackaged them in a psychedelic, evolutionary framework that extends the progression of consciousness into three upper circuits. Leary named the seven bio-survival, emotional-locomotion, mental-manipulative, socio-sexual, rapture, ecstasy, and neurogenetic. He goes into the decoding of DNA and how that will unlock the full transmission of the neurogenetic circuit which will guide us off the planet to “contact other manifestations of the same amino acid seeding… to escape and come home,” thus exposing us the reader to our first glimpse of SMI2LE — Space Migration, Intelligence Increase, and Life Extension.
